International Stroke Conference (ISC)
On 7 - 9 February in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, almost 6,000 scientists and clinicians attended #ISC24, the world's premier meeting dedicated to the science and treatment of cerebrovascular disease and brain health.
Here are some global highlights from ISC:
• Number of cutting-edge clinical trial results including RESILIENT-Extend. The Randomization of Endovascular Treatment with Stent-retriever and/or Thromboaspiration vs. Best Medical Therapy in Acute Ischemic stroke due to Large Vessel OcclusioN Trail in the Extended Time Window. Results showed patients who underwent mechanical thrombectomy (MT) within 8 - 24 hours had significant higher rates of good and excellent outcomes at 90 days, suggesting that expanding availability of MT worldwide could benefit more patients.
•In resource-limited settings, stroke patients face access and availability issues to acute specialty care and rehabilitation services resulting in higher mortality and worse functional outcomes. This session discussed the unique challenges of implementing acute stroke care in under-resources regions of the world, and offered potential strategies and practical solutions; including workforce development, stroke center development, telestroke networks and global efforts to increase availability of thrombectomy.
• Global perspectives on stroke and brain health with organizations including World Stroke Organization, Indian Stroke Association, World Hypertension League and the European Stroke Organization.
