Elevating Stroke Care: India’s First Comprehensive Stroke Centers Earn Certification

April 2025

Stroke is the fourth-leading cause of death in India, with a striking 25% of stroke patients under the age of 45. The urgency for coordinated, science-driven care has never been greater. In a major milestone for the country, the American Stroke Association, a subdivision of the American Heart Association, has awarded its first-ever Comprehensive Stroke Center Certifications in India to Apollo Hospital in Hyderabad and Aster Hospital in Calicut.

Both hospitals met rigorous international standards in stroke care, including rapid diagnosis, advanced imaging capabilities, 24/7 access to specialized treatment teams, and participation in advanced research studies. Their achievement marks a pivotal step in building a stronger stroke care infrastructure across India — and offers a model for excellence in addressing even the most challenging and complex of cases.

“Using science-based methods for stroke assessment, diagnosis and treatment is essential to improving outcomes — saving lives and lowering the risk of long-term disability,” said D.P. Suresh, MD, FAHA, FACC, FSCAI, FJCS, a volunteer member of the Association’s International Committee.

In India, hospitals may pursue two levels of stroke certification:

  • Primary Stroke Center — Focuses on acute ischemic stroke care, including data-driven treatment and patient transfer protocols.
  • Comprehensive Stroke Center — Builds on Primary Stroke Center standards, providing around-the-clock access to advanced stroke treatment for the most challenging cases.

Both certification designations are supported by robust quality improvement programs that aim to deliver more equitable, effective care. Congratulations to Apollo and Aster Hospitals on their groundbreaking commitment to raising the bar for stroke care in India!
