The American Heart Association's Hands-Only CPR campaign is making significant strides to double global cardiac arrest survival rates within five years by dramatically increasing the number of people trained. In Tokyo, a recent collaborative event with the Chasing M’s Foundation trained more than 400 students at the American School in Japan in Hands-Only CPR. Additionally, 80 medical students at Teikyo University participated in specialized training sessions, emphasizing the importance of immediate response during cardiac emergencies.
Attendees from the association and the Chasing M’s Foundation included Nancy Brown, the association’s CEO; Damar Hamlin, former Buffalo Bills safety and founder of the Chasing M’s Foundation; and representatives of the Japan Flag Football Association and ZOLL Medical. Students gained a greater understanding of the importance of this work through hands-on practice sessions, fireside chats, and AED demonstrations. As Hamlin explained, “We are teaching youth that learning CPR is a superpower that allows each of us to be prepared to help save a life.”
Meanwhile, in Rome, the association hosted an incredible training day at the Piazza Risorgimento. Trainers transformed a bustling Roman square into a hub of lifesaving action as they led jam-packed Hands-Only CPR exercises in a variety of languages.
Educating and empowering people everywhere is critical to the association’s goal to improve cardiac health outcomes around the world. The association’s Regional Director in Europe, Glenn Vanden Houten, said in Rome, “Being a lifesaver means you act — call emergency services, start chest compressions, and use the AED as soon as it’s available. This can double or even triple the chances of survival.” We know how to save lives, and we’re sharing how. Together, we’re creating lifesavers around the world.
