Sharing scientific knowledge with colleagues around the globe has been a central tenet of the American Heart Association since our founding in 1924, and our participation in the 2025 National Congress of the Italian Society of Cardiology (SIC) in 4 – 7 December in Rome, Italy exemplifies this vision in action.
By invitation from SIC President Pasquale Perrone-Filardi, M.D., Ph.D., the Heart Association’s volunteer President Stacey E. Rosen, M.D., FAHA, delivered the opening address at the event, which convenes annually around crucial topics in cardiovascular medicine.
“Knowing the greatest discoveries in health must reach people where they are is why collaboration is not only needed, but necessary,” she said. “We recognize there are many global challenges to this mission — but we also know that we are stronger, and more impactful, when we work together.”
The Heart Association is collaborating with SIC and other organizations in Italy to train health care professionals in resuscitation and emergency cardiovascular care, expand engagement with our Professional Members, and explore new research opportunities to develop innovative solutions for heart disease and stroke.
During her time in Rome, Dr. Rosen also met with Archbishop Rino Fisichella, Pro-Prefetto of the Dicastery, who was recognized with an appreciation award for his support of the Heart Association’s Hands-Only CPR awareness efforts, including the Hands-Only CPR event held April 5 in Rome. Following that visit, Dr. Rosen toured the cardiac unit at Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital, where she learned more about the hospital and its training center, as well as the Heart Association’s ongoing CPR training of Vatican Museum Security Guards.
